The Whole Child

Sign for the Whole Child!
Today, ASCD launched a petition asking the Obama administration to make a whole child approach to education a national priority through the creation of a President's Council on the Whole Child.
Such a council would focus national attention on children and highlight the need for educators and noneducators alike to come together in support of the whole child. It would comprise educators, community members, state officials, national leaders, and other experts who would provide the president with expert counsel to coordinate the education, health, and social service sectors serving our nation's youth.
Please sign the petition today at www.ascd.org/signforwholechild. If the petition garners 25,000 signatures within 30 days, White House staff will review it and issue an official response.
Your signature on the petition sends a message to Washington, D.C., leaders to focus on what really matters—our children—by asking them to create a President’s Council on the Whole Child.
Thank you for your support!

ASCD calls on educators, communities, and policymakers to work together to fulfill the new compact for the education of the whole child. Successful implementation of these policies results in successful learners who are knowledgeable, emotionally and physically healthy, civically active, artistically engaged, prepared for economic self-sufficiency, and ready for the world beyond formal schooling.

MASA, Michigan ASCD collaborate on performance evaluation rubrics
Districts looking for an affordable, research-based tool for evaluating school administrators heard some good news during the MASA 2011 Fall Conference. The School ADvance Administrator Evaluation System was rolled out during a conference clinic session to a packed audience. The research-based system, developed by MASA and Michigan ASCD, in cooperation with Dawn Zimmer of Zimco, Inc, meets all the requirements of Michgan’s new laws addressing employee evaluation.
Patricia Reeves (MASA) and Pat McNeill (Michigan ASCD) have completed the first phase of development, which is a principal assessment rubric. (Rubrics for central office and superintendent will follow). They are now working with Zimco, Inc. to incorporate the rubrics into the STAGES software. MASA/Michigan ASCD will also be partnering to provide professional development around the School ADvance process and tool.
“We’re proud that School ADvance rubrics incorporate the very best research and practices in the field,” said co-developer Patricia Reeves, MASA Courageous Journey director. “We’ve worked hard to develop an easy-to-use rubric that will make meaningful, annual evaluation of school administrators possible. “
The School ADvance Principal assessment instrument measures principal performance by tracking evidence of observable behaviors in 5 Domains, which include 9-12 Factors, further broken down into 24-28 Characteristics of research-proven practices of effective building-level leadership.
